Anyway, the really sad part is that the cause of this happening to me is that we have had a lot of rain here and so our grass is very very rich and that is why I am having this problem. I have been in a lot of pain and lie down a lot. I have to take lots of medicine and the really bad part is that I cannot go back outside in the pasture until next November. There is not a cure for this, just have to control it somehow.
Hi there Joe, here and would like to know why I have to be shut up too. My hooves are just dandy. But I guess I have to keep my friend Smoke company. Guess I will get my skinny figure back now but this is just NOT any fun. Smoke can barely walk much less play with me. Hopefully his little hooves will feel better as soon as we get the special pain killing medicine for him. Don't you love me modeling my belly??

We're purring for you, Smoke. That sounds terribly uncomfortable.
ReplyDeletePoor Smoke... That is serious stuffs. WE have never heard it called anything except Foundering.
ReplyDeleteIt happens FAST and takes a long time to clear up.
Oh no, Poor Smoke! We call it laminitis and know how very painful it is. Are you having anti inflammatory medicine for your hooves as well as pain killers? We get a lot of problems here as well because it is so wet and the grass grows too lush. When we have horses that are prone to it we put them on starvation pasture which isn't really pasture but almost bare earth. Your feet will be too painful for that but hopefully next year they will be better again.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad. We don't know much about diseases of animals other than humans, cats and dogs. We are sorry there is no cure. Hoping the pain meds help and sending our purrayers, purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette

Oh No! Poor Smokey! Laminitis is a really nasty thing, and it's true that too much fresh grass can be a dangerous thing. Take care of yourself, Pal, and feel better soonest.
ReplyDeleteSupportive Neighs,
Vidock and Violette
Poor Smoke! We are so sorry you have to deal with this. We love you and Joe, and hope that pain-killing medicine works well. Big hugs to you both, sweet ones.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of such a thing, Smoke. I wouldn't have thought that plump, moist grass could do harm to a donkey or horse. Wow. I hope the problem eases soon. It can't be very nice at all. Good luck to you.
ReplyDeleteYour belly does look very cute! I am very sorry to hear about your hooves... I know what foundering is and I know it's not fun :( I hope you can control it and feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteOh Smoke we are so sorry you have had founder, it's so nasty for all equids.
ReplyDeleteWould you be able to go out with one of those muzzles that allow you to only graze a tiny bit? Where we live the grass is really rich and sugary and often we get a second flush of sugary grass in the autumn too. Our ape knows many horses and donkey who get laminitis badly every year because of the sweet grass.
We hope you feel better soon and the medicines help you. Sometimes a cool hose on your sore hooves can provide some relief, but we bet Marg has already done that for you as she is such a great care giver and friend to animals
Gerry & Mungo
Ah, Smoke, I'm so sorry about the founder, buddy! Mom told me a little bit about it and it sounds like it does not feel nice at all :( I hope that the managing will help you to feel much more comfortable soon!
ReplyDeletePoor Smoke! To have to stay inside all summer! Glad he's got his buddy to keep him company. Here's an article on laminitis/founder--the author goes way into detail but I learned a lot about it. Maybe it can help you with Smoke.
